2018, International Journal of Nursing StudiesCitation Excerpt :Involuntary admission is frequently required and this, combined with detention in a locked ward can lead to patient violence, especially in those who do not recognise or accept the need for hospital treatment (Calver et al., 2013). An important protective factor that can limit the likelihood of aggression is the strength of the therapeutic alliance between nursing staff and patients (Cookson et al., 2012; Norman and Griffiths, 2018; Cutcliffe and McKenna, 2018). In recent years managing conflict has become the major focus for nursing staff in inpatient units (Bowers et al., 2014).
